The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) is reminding residents of Eastern Madera County and Mariposa County about the dangers of fireworks and the importance of celebrating safely this Independence Day.

CAL FIRE emphasized that all fireworks, including “Safe and Sane” fireworks, are illegal throughout Mariposa County and in all areas east of the Madera Canal in Madera County.

Residents looking to enjoy fireworks are encouraged to attend one of the area’s public displays:

  • Bass Lake (Eastern Madera County): Friday, July 4, 2026, at approximately 9:00 p.m.
  • Lake McClure (Merced County): Friday, July 4, 2026, at approximately 9:00 p.m.

CAL FIRE Peace Officers will be conducting enforcement throughout the holiday. Anyone found possessing illegal fireworks can be cited and have the fireworks confiscated. Violations are subject to a minimum $1,000 fine and up to one year in county jail.

Individuals who possess or use fireworks in areas where they create a fire risk may also face felony charges, punishable by up to three years in California State Prison and fines of up to $50,000.

CAL FIRE also reminds residents that anyone who starts a fire through the use of fireworks may be charged with negligence.

The department encourages everyone to do their part to help prevent wildfires during the holiday.

“CAL FIRE wishes everyone a safe holiday and remember one less spark means one less wildfire.”
