REEDLEY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – Reedley Police have identified the driver sought after an elderly couple was run over in Reedley early Tuesday morning.

According to police, just before 4:45 a.m., they responded to Manning and Haney avenues, where they found 75-year-old Luis Martinez Araujo and 78-year-old Maria Juarez Mendez lying in the roadway.

Investigators determined a vehicle was traveling on the road when the driver hit the couple crossing the street and fled the scene.

Officers performed life-saving measures on the couple before being airlifted to a local hospital, where they ultimately succumbed to their injuries.

Using cameras in the city, detectives quickly tracked down the suspect vehicle believed to be involved and later located the van parked in a fruit field on Highway 145 and American Avenue, near Kerman.

After speaking with the farmworkers throughout the fields, detectives found witnesses and ultimately identified the driver as 48-year-old Omar Lopez Chavez of Reedley. They also determined there were five passengers in the van with Chavez, all of whom were aware of what happened and are cooperative with the investigation.

Detectives report a Ramey warrant on two counts of felony hit-and-run resulting in death and two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter.

Reedley Police are actively searching for Chavez and ask anyone with information regarding his whereabouts to contact them at 559-637-4250.
