FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – A Fresno-based nonprofit called the Breakbox Thought Collective is celebrating moving into a brand-new, bigger, and better space.

Officials hope services inside the space, aimed at helping Black people in Fresno find their authentic selves, will be able to serve more members of the community than before.

Founder Jamillah Hasan-Oliver says Breakbox has been serving Fresno since 2018, but the new space will help offer new classes, workshops, and immersive activities centered around healing.

“We kicked off on Thursday, which was our grand opening and ribbon cutting,” Hasan-Oliver said. “The Fresno Metro Black Chamber of Commerce came and they gave us a ribbon. Then, we officially were open and announced our what our mission and vision is for this community.”

From dance to music and even an art tent that allowed people to release emotions by throwing paint onto canvases they were allowed to keep, Hasan-Oliver says it’s just the beginning of Breakbox’s mission.

“We want it to be a hub for the community,” she said. “Different small businesses, different organizations, different programs, and lots of people who occupy this space, for different reasons.”
