Hiking Yosemite: The First Mile

Hiking Yosemite: The First Mile
By: Sierra News Posted On: July 10, 2026 View: 14

I’ve noticed something about almost every hike I’ve taken in Yosemite.

The first mile lies to me.

It tells me my backpack is too heavy.

It reminds me that maybe I should have stretched a little more before leaving the trailhead.

It has a way of making me wonder if I packed too much water…or not enough.

Sometimes it even makes me question whether I picked the right hike in the first place.

Then something funny happens.

I settle in.

My breathing finds a rhythm.

The trail starts feeling familiar beneath my boots.

And before I know it, I’m no longer thinking about the hike.

I’m simply hiking.

I’ve started paying attention to that first mile because I don’t think it’s unique to me.

I see it on other hikers, too.

Families adjusting backpacks.

Parents reminding kids that the waterfall is still a long way off.

Friends joking about who already needs a break.

Everyone seems to spend those first few minutes figuring things out.

And that’s okay.

I’ve learned not to judge a hike by its first mile.

Some of my favorite days in Yosemite didn’t start with a feeling of confidence.

They started with a little uncertainty.

Maybe my legs felt heavier than I expected.

Maybe the climb looked steeper than it did in the photos.

Maybe I was wondering if I’d bitten off more than I could chew.

But Yosemite has a way of rewarding patience.

Not just with scenery.

With perspective.

One step becomes another.

The switchbacks become a little easier.

The conversation starts flowing.

You stop thinking about the miles ahead and begin noticing the dogwood blooming beside the trail or the sound of the river somewhere below.

Without realizing it, you’ve found your rhythm.

I think that’s one of the reasons I enjoy hiking so much.

It’s one of the few places where life gets simpler with every step instead of more complicated.

The to-do list fades away.

The phone stays in the backpack a little longer.

The only thing that really matters is the next step.

And then the one after that.

If you’re new to hiking, here’s something I’d love for you to know.

Don’t let the first mile convince you the whole hike will feel that way.

Give yourself a little grace.

Slow your pace if you need to.

Take a sip of water.

Stop and look around.

The trail isn’t going anywhere.

More often than not, you’ll find that somewhere along the way, the hike stops feeling like work and starts feeling like exactly where you wanted to be.

I’ve come to appreciate that transition.

It’s one of my favorite parts of the day.

Not because it’s dramatic.

Because it’s real.

Trail Truth

The first mile doesn’t get to decide how the day ends.

Sometimes all it takes is a little patience, a few deep breaths, and another hundred steps before everything starts to fall into place.

I’ve found that’s true on more than just the trail.

And remember, the trail doesn’t end here.

So until next time, get outside, take the scenic route, and make a few memories. After all, that’s what the best adventures are really about. We’ll see you in the next edition of Hiking Yosemite.
