More Than a Film Festival: Yosemite’s Stories Take Center Stage

More Than a Film Festival: Yosemite’s Stories Take Center Stage

For generations, people have come to Yosemite searching for something.

Some come for adventure. Some come for solitude. Some come simply to stand beneath granite walls and towering trees that seem almost too grand to be real.

But long before social media, before guidebooks and travel blogs, Yosemite’s story was being told by artists, photographers, writers, climbers, and ordinary visitors who felt compelled to share what they had experienced here.

Now, that tradition is finding a new stage.

Later this month, Yosemite Valley will host the inaugural Yosemite Film Festival & Storyteller Summit, a four-day gathering that celebrates the people and stories that have helped shape the park’s legacy.

At first glance, it may sound like a festival for filmmakers. In reality, it’s something much broader.

The event will bring together climbers, conservationists, historians, photographers, artists, and storytellers who share a common connection to Yosemite. Through films, presentations, discussions, and community gatherings, attendees will explore not only Yosemite’s past, but also the stories still being written today.

That focus on storytelling feels particularly fitting for Yosemite.

The park has inspired some of America’s most iconic images, from the photography of Ansel Adams to countless books, documentaries, and outdoor films. The stories born here have introduced millions of people around the world to Yosemite’s waterfalls, granite cliffs, giant sequoias, and wilderness.

Closer to home, those stories belong to our mountain communities as well.

Many local residents have family histories tied to Yosemite. Some worked in the park. Others built businesses that welcomed generations of visitors traveling through Oakhurst, Fish Camp, Mariposa, North Fork, Bass Lake, and surrounding communities. For many, Yosemite isn’t simply a destination—it’s part of their own story.

That’s one reason the new festival arrives at an interesting moment.

As visitation continues to grow and technology changes the way people experience public lands, events like this remind us that Yosemite is more than a collection of scenic viewpoints. It is a place of human experiences, personal connections, and shared memories.

Every climber who reaches a summit, every photographer who captures a sunrise, every family introducing a child to Yosemite for the first time becomes part of that ongoing story.

The Yosemite Film Festival & Storyteller Summit aims to celebrate those connections while creating new opportunities for people to learn from one another and reflect on what Yosemite means to them.

In a region where so much of life revolves around the outdoors, conservation, recreation, and tourism, that conversation feels particularly relevant.

After all, Yosemite’s greatest resource may not be its granite walls or waterfalls.

It may be the stories those places inspire.

The Yosemite Film Festival & Storyteller Summit is scheduled for June 25-28 in Yosemite Valley and will feature film screenings, presentations, discussions, and community events centered on Yosemite’s history, culture, stewardship, and outdoor traditions.
