Every Yosemite hiker has a first trail.
For some, it’s a stroll to Lower Yosemite Fall. For others, it’s the Mist Trail or a walk through Cook’s Meadow.
But if someone asked me where I’d recommend they begin their Yosemite hiking adventure, Mariposa Grove would be near the top of my list.
There’s something special about starting your journey among the giant sequoias.
One of the things I like most about Mariposa Grove is that it lets you choose your own adventure. If you’re just getting started, you can enjoy the Big Trees Loop, an easy, mostly flat 0.3-mile walk that takes about 30 to 45 minutes. If you’re ready for a little more, the Grizzly Giant Loop is about 2 miles round trip and takes most hikers an hour and a half to two hours, leading you to two of the grove’s most famous landmarks—the Grizzly Giant and the California Tunnel Tree.
And if you discover you’re having one of those days where you just don’t want to turn around yet, the trails continue deeper into the grove for much longer hikes.
The nice thing is, you don’t have to decide all of that before you arrive. Mariposa Grove lets you hike the day you’re feeling, not the one you thought you had planned.
Before you ever think about the distance you’re hiking or how much elevation you’re gaining, you’re looking up…way up.
Pictures don’t prepare you for that first moment standing beneath one of these incredible trees. They’re impressive in photographs, but they’re something entirely different when you’re standing at the base of one, craning your neck toward the sky.
One of the things I appreciate most about Mariposa Grove is that it doesn’t ask you to be an experienced hiker.
It simply invites you to explore.
You’ll probably stop more often than you expected—not because you’re out of breath, but because another giant sequoia catches your eye. Before long, someone in your group is pointing up into the branches or running a hand across the deeply furrowed bark, quietly saying…
“Wow…look at that.”
Those moments have a way of slowing everyone down.
And honestly, that’s part of the experience.
If you’re introducing a friend, family member, or someone special to Yosemite for the first time, Mariposa Grove is a wonderful place to begin. There’s no pressure to rush, no race to a summit, and no need to prove anything.
Just take your time.
Walk a little slower than usual.
Look up more often than you think you need to.
If you’ve never stood beneath a giant sequoia before, don’t be surprised if you find yourself smiling for no particular reason. There’s something about trees that have been standing for hundreds, and in many cases thousands, of years that quietly reminds us how small we are—and somehow, how fortunate we are to be there.
Maybe that’s why so many people leave Mariposa Grove talking less about the hike itself and more about how the place made them feel.
I think that’s a pretty good way to begin a hiking journey in Yosemite.
Trail Truth
Every experienced Yosemite hiker was once standing at their very first trailhead.
Mariposa Grove is a wonderful reminder that you don’t have to start with the hardest hike.
You just have to start.
And remember, the trail doesn’t end here.
So until next time, get outside, take the scenic route, and make a few memories. After all, that’s what the best adventures are really about. We’ll see you in the next edition of Hiking Yosemite.
