DOJ: Chowchilla prison sergeant who sought photos of prepubescent minors sentenced

CHOWCHILLA, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – A former corrections sergeant at the Central California Women’s Facility in Chowchilla was sentenced on Monday for handling child sexual abuse material (CSAM), the US Department of Justice announced.

According to prosecutors, 40-year-old Ralph Contreras Jr. received and distributed CSAM through social media apps between Sept. 29, 2024, and Jan. 2, 2025, specifically seeking CSAM of prepubescent minors.

During the time of his arrest, officials say Contreras was working as a corrections sergeant.

Contreras pleaded guilty on April 13, 2026.

The federal Department of Justice says he was sentenced on Tuesday to 15 years in prison for receipt and distribution of child sexual abuse material.
