The Upper Smith Fire is an emerging incident located 20 miles northwest of Bonners Ferry, ID, approximately 3.5 miles up the Smith Creek drainage off the Kootenai River Valley. The fire was started by lightning in the overnight hours of the 7th and 8th of July and confirmed on the morning of the 8th. Suppression options, access, and safety zones are being developed. Initial attack efforts include aviation, engines, an out of area 20 person handcrew, and the ordering of more handcrews and additional resources.
