Man dead after Fresno Police shooting: what we know so far

FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – A 42-year-old man was shot dead by police following an incident in south Fresno on Friday.

According to Fresno Police Chief Minday Casto, officers were called to the area of Church Avenue and Cedar Avenue at around 11:30 a.m. after a call from a family living in the area. The family reported that an adult son had come to their home uninvited.

Chief Casto says officers responded to the home to find that the man was in the backyard of the home with a gun. They tried for around 30 minutes to get him to put the gun down, but were unable to.

Crisis negotiators attempted to calm down the 42-year-old, but Chief Casto says during that confrontation, “the firearm was presented in a way that was a threat to the officers and shots were fired.”

A drone was used to confirm that the 42-year-old was on the ground before paramedics went to him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 42-year-old has not been officially identified. Chief Casto describes the investigation as “in its very early stages” and did not state whether or not the man fired shots at officers.

Pictures from the scene showed several Fresno Police officers outside the home, some wearing ballistic helmets and carrying large firearms. The Fresno Police Bearcat armored vehicle was also present at the scene.
