3-year-old dies after Fresno crash that killed Selma man

FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – A 3-year-old child has died after being critically injured in a crash that also killed a Selma man on Highway 41 Sunday in Fresno, according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP said the crash happened around 2:25 a.m. on southbound Highway 41, north of Highway 180.

Officers said a Toyota Camry was stopped in the middle lane with no lights on when a Kia Optima, driven by a 33-year-old Fresno woman, crashed into it.

CHP said several drivers had reported near misses with the disabled Toyota before the crash.

The Fresno County coroner identified the Toyota driver as 31-year-old Carlos Sandoval Jr. of Selma. Sandoval was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.

Officers said the 3-year-old child was in the Kia and was wearing a seat belt, but was not in a child safety seat.

The child who passed away Wednesday night at the hospital has been officially identified by the Fresno County Coroner’s Office as Kendrixx Leavell of Hanford. A GoFundMe has been set up to help.

An adult passenger in the Kia that struck the victim’s vehicle also suffered major injuries.
