MERCED COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – A man was arrested following an argument where he allegedly committed a hate crime on Friday in Dos Palos, the Merced County Sheriff’s Office said.
The sheriff’s office said that 45-year-old John Jones allegedly got into an argument with a 68-year-old man over not being allowed to farm on his property.
During the argument, Jones allegedly called the victim racial slurs before grabbing him and pushing him against a vehicle.
The sheriff’s office said Jones threatened to kill the victim, retrieved a handgun and pointed it at the 68-year-old. He then allegedly antagonized the victim to give him a reason kill him. However, the victim did not and Jones left the area.
Deputies responded to Jones’ residence to follow up on the incident and he was arrested.

After a search warrant was served, deputies said they found 28 firearms. They seized a firearm that was used during the altercation.
Jones was booked into the Merced County Jail and is facing charges for felony assault with a firearm and committing a hate crime, deputies said.
