The Spring Pine Fire started the evening of March 22, 2026 and is located approximately 3 miles east of Bastrop, Texas. The fire was initially responded to by local fire departments. Texas A&M Forest Service was requested to provide assistance in the form of additional firefighters and heavy equipment. Texas A&M Forest Service and local fire departments are in joint command of the fire.
Active fire behavior with group tree torching was observed. Firefighters worked to develop a plan for a firing operation using existing fire breaks. These fire breaks were improved in preparation for a safe firing operation. The fire bumped to Highway 21 where locals worked to hold the fire there as dozers began direct line construction. Several structures on the north side of the fire were voluntarily evacuated.
Ground and air resources will returned to the fire Monday, March 23. By mid morning, crews were engaged on the right and left flank, mopping-up the fire. Single engine air tankers made effective retardant drops right shoulder down the right flank, enhancing the containment line. As temperatures rose and humidities decreased, fire activity picked up. Smoke impacts to Highway 21 remained minimal on Monday afternoon.
Firefighters are currently on scene of the fire, and will work on mop-up and containment efforts.
