Update: 3/5/2026

Seasonal weather patterns across the region are transitioning toward the cooler nights, steady daytime warming, and predictable humidity trends that support safe and effective prescribed burning. These improving conditions are creating operational windows suitable for conducting the Summit Point prescribed burn. The project includes six burn units totaling approximately 146 acres, which may be treated individually or in phases depending on daily weather and fuel conditions. As these favorable conditions develop, firefighters will take advantage of them to initiate broadcast burning within the established prescription parameters.

Prescribed fire remains one of the most important tools for maintaining the health and resilience of fire‑adapted ecosystems. Good fire reduces hazardous fuel accumulations, improves forest structure, and helps restore ecological processes that have been limited due to decades of fire exclusion. By applying fire in a deliberate and controlled manner, land managers can reduce the risk of high‑severity wildfire and maintain a landscape that is more resilient and easier to manage under future fire conditions.

Smoke from prescribed burns is typically short‑lived and significantly less impactful than the prolonged, heavy smoke produced during uncontrolled wildfires. Implementing prescribed fire now helps limit the potential for long-duration smoke events and reduces the need for costly wildfire suppression efforts. Overall, prescribed fire is a cost‑effective and proactive approach to protecting nearby communities, natural resources, and long-term ecosystem health.

Stay tuned and informed for future notifications about upcoming burning planned for the Summit Point project.
