Child playing with candle sets apartment on fire in Fresno

FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – A child playing with a candle was the cause of a fire inside a Fresno apartment Friday afternoon, according to the city’s fire department.

Crews say they were called to the 5200 block of N. Fresno Street at around noon for a report of smoke coming from a two-story multi-unit apartment building.

Two people were inside the home at the time, one of them was an 8-year-old child. Both were able to escape the home without injury. Neighbors stepped in and used fire extinguishers to keep the fire in the room where it started and stopped it from extending to the rest of the home.

Investigators confirmed that the fire was started by a child playing with a candle; this incident was the second fire this month started by a child playing with fire, officials say.
