COARSEGOLD, CA — Competitive shooters from across the region will gather in eastern Madera County next month as the Sun Mountain Gun Club hosts its two-day “March Madness” clay target shooting event March 21–22.

The weekend competition will feature a full slate of sporting clays events designed for shooters of varying experience levels, combining both main events and specialty formats. Organizers say the shoot is intended to draw both seasoned competitors and recreational participants looking to test their skills in a structured match environment.

Saturday’s program will include a 100-target main event alongside a 50-target FITASC round, a European-style shooting discipline that emphasizes precision, varied shooting positions, and timed target presentations. Sunday will mirror that schedule with another 100-target main event and additional FITASC competition.

In addition to the daily events, shooters will have the option to compete in specialty contests offered either day. These include a 50-target True Pair event — where two clay targets are launched simultaneously — and a 50-target Super Sporting course designed to challenge competitors with complex target sequences and varied shooting stations.

Event registration and scoring will be handled through Scorechaser.com, an online system commonly used for clay target competitions nationwide. Participants can register in advance or find additional event details through the platform.

Located at 32868 Shotgun Lane in Coarsegold, the club has steadily expanded its facilities and programming over the past several years. Recent improvements have included upgrades to shooting stations, enhanced course layouts, and infrastructure work aimed at improving accessibility and safety for both competitors and spectators. Club leadership has also invested in modern target-throwing equipment and scoring systems to better support larger registered shoots.

In addition to physical upgrades, the organization has broadened its event calendar to include more registered competitions, instructional clinics, and community-oriented shoots. These efforts have helped position the club as a growing hub for sporting clays in the Sierra foothills, drawing participants from across the Central Valley and beyond while supporting local tourism and outdoor recreation.

Club representatives say the March shoot is one of several competitive events planned for the year and is expected to draw shooters from throughout the region. Events like this not only provide competitive opportunities but also help sustain local shooting sports traditions and bring visitors into the foothill community.

Shooters interested in participating can register online or contact the club directly for additional information regarding entry fees, squad times, or equipment requirements.
