MADERA COUNTY, CA – The power of poetry filled the room as students from Voyager’s High School, Yosemite High School, and Glacier High School took the stage for this year’s Poetry Out Loud competition, delivering moving recitations before a live audience and panel of judges. The event showcased not only the students’ memorization and performance skills, but also the emotional depth and personal courage required to bring spoken word to life.

Participants demonstrated strong command of their selections, blending voice, pacing, and interpretation to convey the meaning of each poem. The event underscored the continued importance of arts education and public performance opportunities for young people, particularly in rural communities where creative outlets can be transformative.

About the Poetry Out Loud Program

The competition is part of Poetry Out Loud, a nationwide initiative created by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation. The program encourages high school students to learn about poetry through memorization, performance, and public speaking.

Students begin by competing at the classroom or school level, advancing to county or regional competitions before moving on to the state and national finals. Along the way, participants develop analytical reading skills, confidence in public speaking, and a deeper appreciation for literary history. The program also offers scholarships and awards at higher levels of competition, providing both recognition and opportunity for students who excel.

Local organizers noted that participation in Poetry Out Loud often gives students a first experience performing before a large audience — an experience that can build confidence far beyond the classroom.

Judges Recognize Talent and Preparation

A distinguished panel of judges evaluated this year’s local competition, including Dianna Marsh, India Rose Buenrostro, Kwamise “Lady K” Fletcher, and Dr. Martha Mossman. Performances were scored based on accuracy, interpretation, stage presence, and overall impact.

Student coach Bert Roper also contributed his expertise, volunteering his time to help support the evaluation process and provide insight for participants.

Organizers extended congratulations to this year’s winners, noting that each demonstrated exceptional confidence, preparation, and emotional delivery. Their performances reflected weeks of rehearsal and thoughtful study of their chosen works.

Special recognition went to Sarah Johnsen, who will advance to represent Madera County at the state competition. Event organizers expressed pride in her accomplishment and confidence that she will represent the county with distinction.

A Community Effort Behind the Scenes

Organizers emphasized that the success of the event relied on dedicated teamwork. Director of Operations and Programs Areej Latif coordinated and co-hosted the event, helping ensure the day ran smoothly for students, judges, and families.

Additional thanks were extended to Executive Director Tamar Karkazian, Operations Assistant Jesus Ortiz, and team members Ofelia and Shaima, whose logistical support and planning efforts contributed to a seamless program.

The event also benefited from strong county support. Organizers thanked the Madera County Department and Board of Supervisors for recognizing student achievement and helping elevate the experience. Special appreciation was extended to Supervisor Gonzalez for co-hosting, along with staff members Mellissa Sanchez and Sarah Anderson for their coordination and assistance.

Supporting the Arts in Madera County

The Poetry Out Loud competition reflects the broader mission of the Madera County Arts Council, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting arts education, supporting local artists, and expanding cultural opportunities throughout the region. Through exhibitions, youth programs, workshops, and public events, the council works to strengthen the role of the arts in community life while encouraging creative expression among residents of all ages.

Events like Poetry Out Loud bring that mission into focus, offering students a platform to develop confidence, connect with literature, and share their voices with the wider community.
