Update: 2/17/2026

The United States Wildland Fire Service (USWFS) Southwest District are preparing for an upcoming pile burn in the BLM Tres Rios Field Office, specifically the Durango, Colo area. A weather system is moving in, bringing cooler temperatures, higher humidity, and favorable winds, and possible snow—ideal conditions for safe and effective burning.

Planned Dates:
Wednesday 2/17/2026 through Saturday 2/21/2026 (weather permitting)

Why we burn:
Pile burns help reduce hazardous fuels, improve forest health, and lower wildfire risk in our community.

Safety first:
Our crews will be on-site monitoring conditions closely to ensure everything is conducted safely and in compliance with regulations. Fire managers follow a detailed, approved prescribed fire plan and have smoke permits from the State of Colorado.

Smoke & Air Quality: Smoke may be visible from Florida Road, Highway 550, Highway 90, and other nearby routes.
Smoke may be visible during active burning, especially in the afternoon, and could linger in low-lying areas during cooler evenings. Nearby communities may notice residual smoke as piles smolder post-ignition. visit: https://www.airnow.gov for air quality information.

Important:
This is a planned event. Please do not call 911 to report a wildfire. Please check back for updates.

Update 2/12/2026

Due to recent weather conditions not producing the moisture needed, no pile burning will occur this week FEB 12th - Feb 14th, 2026.

Another winter weather pattern is expected to return next week. Fire crews will continue to monitor conditions closely and will be ready to proceed with burning operations if conditions become favorable.

Please check back for more updates.
Thank you for your understanding and support as we prioritize safety and compliance
