IDENTIFIED: High school student killed on Fresno highway

FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – The teenager who was killed while crossing a Fresno highway earlier this week was a high school student from Justin Garza High School, officials confirmed on Friday.

According to the Fresno County Coroner’s Office, the person killed Thursday morning was 16-year-old Maxwell Thompson of Fresno.

According to California Highway Patrol officials, Thompson was walking along the northbound lane of Highway 99 when he ran in front of oncoming traffic and was struck by a Toyota Tacoma truck.

The teen was thrown to the side of the highway. First responders arrived within minutes and attempted life-saving measures, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The CHP originally described the victim as a 17-year-old, but the Fresno County Coroner’s Office later confirmed that he was 16 years old.

Officials say the driver of the Toyota stayed on scene and cooperated with law enforcement.
