

MERCED COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – An elementary school in Merced County was placed on lockdown after animal control officers were shot at on Wednesday afternoon following a report of aggressive dogs, the sheriff’s office said.
At around 11:40 a.m., the sheriff’s office said animal control officers were dispatched to Winfield Elementary School. Officers tracked aggressive dogs to a residence in the 6900 block of Chestnut Lane.
The sheriff’s office said that as the officers approached the residence, they believed the officers had four shots fired at them. The officers retreated to safety.
Deputies immediately responded to the area, and the school was placed on lockdown. Any family associated with the school was asked to reunite at the Walnut Avenue side of the school.
No injuries have been reported. The sheriff’s office said no additional shots were fired.
At around 4:15 p.m., the sheriff’s office said that Chestnut Lane was reopened. The scene remains active.
According to deputies, no arrests have been made. However, investigators continue to interview persons of interest. The investigation was turned over to the Merced County Sheriff’s Office Detective Bureau.
