
The Horn Fire was reported around 2:30 pm on Wednesday, August 13th. The cause of fire is lightning.
The fire is burning on private property and DNRC-managed land located between Cliff Lake and Highway 87 in Madison County, near the Montana-Idaho border. The Montana DNRC, local government, and Forest Service are assisting with fire response. Fuels in the area are primarily grass and brushy fuels.
Evacuation orders are in place for residents east of Highway 87, south of Pond Road, and north of Mill Creek Road. Highway 87 is closed from the junction with Highway 287 down to the Idaho Border. Horn Creek Road, Cliff Lake Road, and Wade Lake Road are also closed.
Ground resources currently on scene include seven type 6 engines, 2 bulldozers, and 2 water tenders. Two type 2 crews have been ordered. Aviation resources on scene include one type 1 helicopter, two type 2 helicopters, and an air attack platform. Three large air tankers (LATs) and an additional type 2 helicopter have been ordered.
