Short Crown Runs
Wind Driven Runs
Conditions are conducive to large fire growth, with all key factors for extreme fire behavior. Live and dead fuel moistures are at critically low levels. Steep slopes, wind-exposed mesa, and continuous flammable vegetation further promote rapid fire spread. Prolonged adverse weather conditions, including several months of above average temperatures, below average precipitation, and ongoing drought have severely stressed the ecosystem. Multiple days of Reg Flag warnings have been and will continue for the next few days.
Fuel loads are especially complex and volatile, consisting of preheated mature and decadent sage, piñon juniper, and Douglas-fir. These are mixed with heavy surface fuels which are dead and downed from insect and disease outbreaks, and a dense grass/shrub understory.
