MENDOTA, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – Mendota Police are actively searching for the person who was seen on video punching an officer in the face and running away at a city-sanctioned event.
According to police, on Sunday, July 27, shortly before 9 p.m., officers were present at the former William Robert Johnston Municipal Airport for a city-sanctioned vehicle “burnout pit event.”
During this time, police say a large fight broke out, and as they were trying to mitigate the incident, a suspect punched an officer in the face from behind and fled.
“This was a cowardly, criminal assault on a peace officer who was present to restore order and ensure public safety,” said Chief Kevin W. Smith. “Striking an officer from behind and then running is the act of someone who has no regard for community, accountability, or decency.”

Investigators report they are working to review body-worn cameras, surveillance footage, and witness accounts to identify the suspect.
Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Mendota Police Department at 559-600-3111.
